> Gadsden has a community college in town and a four-year university a short drive away in Jacksonville. Here is how to find a room, furnish it cheaply, get around, and what it honestly costs.

Gadsden sits on a bend of the Coosa River in north-east Alabama, the seat of Etowah County, with a historic downtown strung along Broad Street and Lookout Mountain rising to the north. It is a working river city rather than a college town: the student population here is smaller and more scattered than in places built around a single campus. According to the Census Reporter profile drawn from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey 2024 five-year estimates, Gadsden had a population of 33,374, a median household income of $40,345 and a median age of 38.6 years.

Gadsden's own degree-granting institution is a community college; the four-year university that most people associate with the area, Jacksonville State University, has its main campus in the separate town of Jacksonville, in neighbouring Calhoun County. The honest picture is two choices in two places, linked by a short commute. This guide covers both, and the parts of living here that do not change with which campus you enrol at: rooms, second-hand furniture, part-time work, libraries, the trolley, and the real cost of it all.

Before anything else, it helps to know where the listings are. You can browse rooms, second-hand goods, jobs and study spaces for the city on EduFabTech's [Gadsden page](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/gadsden), and the pages below go into each in turn.

## Two kinds of college: Gadsden State in town, Jax State up the road

The college physically in Gadsden is Gadsden State Community College. Its Wallace Drive campus is at 1001 George Wallace Drive, Gadsden, and was established in 1965; the highest credential it awards is the associate degree, which makes it the usual route for people starting a two-year programme or planning to transfer to a four-year school afterwards. Gadsden State spreads across several campuses in the area, so check which one your programme actually meets on before you sign a lease anywhere.

The four-year option is Jacksonville State University, but its campus is not in Gadsden. According to the university's facts and history page, Jacksonville State was founded on 22 February 1883 as the Jacksonville State Normal School and became a university in 1966; it occupies 79 buildings across 464 acres in Jacksonville, and lists off-site locations in Anniston, Gadsden and Fort Payne. The main campus is a short drive east of Gadsden, and the university describes its setting as nearly midway between Birmingham, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia on its at-a-glance page. Jax State is a comprehensive public university whose sports teams are the Gamecocks, and the university reported enrolling 10,433 students for Fall 2026, a sixth consecutive enrolment record. You will see listings close to that campus on the [Jacksonville State University page](https://edufabtech.com/near/jacksonville-state-university).

The practical takeaway: if you enrol at Jax State you will probably live in Jacksonville itself, where the dormitories and most student rentals are. Gadsden becomes relevant as a cheaper base with a commute, or if you are at Gadsden State. Decide which campus you attend most days, and let that set where you look for a room.

## Finding a room, and paying a deposit safely

Gadsden's rental stock is mostly older single-family houses and small apartment complexes rather than purpose-built student blocks. Students tend to look around downtown and East Gadsden, along the Rainbow Drive and Meighan Boulevard corridors, and in the adjacent towns of Rainbow City and Attalla, which are a few minutes away by car. There is no campus housing office in the city itself to vet landlords for you, so the checking falls to you.

Start looking four to eight weeks before term if you can; the market is small enough that a genuinely cheap, well-located place does not sit empty for long. See any room in person, or send someone you trust, before you pay a cent. Walk the actual unit, not a show flat; confirm the address matches the listing; and meet the owner or the leasing office on site. A deposit of about one month's rent, paid once you have a signed lease and keys, is ordinary here. What is not ordinary is being asked to wire money, buy gift cards, or send cryptocurrency to "hold" a room you have not seen — that request is the single clearest sign of a scam, and it turns up most often on social-media marketplace posts advertising a house well below the going rate, often with a story about an owner who is out of state and cannot show it. No legitimate Gadsden landlord needs an untraceable payment before you have walked through the door. EduFabTech's [Gadsden rooms page](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/gadsden/rooms) is a starting point, but the same in-person rule applies to every source.

## What living here costs

Gadsden is inexpensive by national standards, which is the main financial reason to be here. For rents, the clearest dated figures come from the National Low Income Housing Coalition's 2026 Out of Reach report, which lists the fair market rent for the Gadsden metropolitan area at $775 a month for a one-bedroom and $1,000 a month for a two-bedroom, and puts the two-bedroom housing wage at $19.23 an hour. A two-bedroom shared with one other student therefore lands well under the one-bedroom figure per person, which is why sharing is common.

If you are at Jax State and want the certainty of campus housing, the university's residence-hall rates page lists first-year halls for the 2026 academic year at $2,160 per semester (Curtiss and Fitzpatrick) and $2,200 per semester (Crow and Dixon), with suite-style North Village rooms at $3,470 per semester. Those are per-semester, not monthly, figures, and they do not include a meal plan. Weigh a dorm's convenience and its included utilities against a cheaper shared house in Gadsden with a commute and separate bills.

## Furnishing a room for next to nothing

A near-empty room is normal when you arrive, and Gadsden is a good place to fill one cheaply. The regional landmark is the Mountain Top Flea Market on US Highway 278 in nearby Attalla, which has run every Sunday, year-round, since 1973, and is large enough that furniture, kitchenware, tools and bedding all turn up for little money if you are willing to haul them. For produce and local goods there is the downtown farmers market on Broad Street in season. Charity and thrift stores around the city — the usual Goodwill, Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity ReStore type of shop — are where desks, lamps and crockery cost a few dollars each.

Buy a mattress new if you can, but almost everything else is fine second-hand. Measure your room and doorways before you go to a flea market, bring cash and a friend with a car or a truck, and check that drawers, chairs and electrical items actually work before you pay. EduFabTech lists local [second-hand furniture](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/gadsden/furniture) in the city, worth scanning at the start and end of each term when students move.

## Working while you study

Part-time work rules depend entirely on your immigration status, and the authoritative source is the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. For international students on an F-1 visa, the department's Study in the States guidance states that on-campus employment may not exceed 20 hours per week while school is in session. Off-campus work for F-1 students is tightly restricted and generally needs specific authorisation. This is a summary, not legal advice: confirm your own situation with a Designated School Official at your institution before you accept any job, and read the official page rather than relying on a forum.

In a city this size the realistic part-time openings are retail, food service, warehousing and campus jobs, and they are not plentiful, so start early and widen your search to Rainbow City and Attalla. Current local postings are collected on the EduFabTech [Gadsden jobs page](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/gadsden/jobs).

## Libraries and places to study

The standout study building in the area belongs to Jax State. Its Houston Cole Library is, per the university's at-a-glance page, the state's tallest academic building at 13 stories; the library's own information page describes it as a 13-story building divided into seven micro-libraries, built in 1972, holding more than 1,100,000 titles — which means whole floors organised by subject, and plenty of quiet corners to work in.

In Gadsden itself, the public option is the Gadsden Public Library. Its locations and hours page gives the main library at 254 South College Street, open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9am–5pm, Tuesday and Thursday 9am–7pm, and Saturday 9am–2pm, with a separate genealogy branch on West Meighan Boulevard. Gadsden State's campuses have their own libraries for enrolled students. If you need a desk outside those hours, EduFabTech tracks [study spaces in Gadsden](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/gadsden/study-spaces); cafés along Broad Street are the informal fallback.

## Getting around on the trolley

Gadsden runs a small public transit system, the city trolley, operated by the City of Gadsden. A city announcement of the current fares, effective 1 January 2023, sets the trolley fare at $1.00 and the DART paratransit fare at $2.00, with reduced fares of $0.25 and $0.50 for senior citizens and people on Medicaid; the announcement lists no separate student fare, so plan on the standard $1.00 unless you qualify for a reduced category. One of the routes is useful to students in particular: the East route runs north–south through central Gadsden to Gadsden State Community College on a 60-minute schedule, departing the 8th Street Transfer Station at the top of each hour.

Be realistic about coverage: the trolley is hourly and limited, and it does not reach Jacksonville. If your campus is Jax State, you will need a car, a lift share, or a room within walking distance of the campus up there. Within Gadsden, a bike plus the trolley can cover downtown, the college and the shopping along Meighan Boulevard, but this is a city built around driving.

## The honest trade-offs, and a first-weeks checklist

The good: Gadsden is cheap to live in, the river and Lookout Mountain are genuinely scenic, downtown Broad Street has been restored into something walkable, and a large Sunday flea market on your doorstep makes setting up a room easy. The hard: the city is not organised around students, so the social life of a classic college town is thin here; public transport is sparse and will not get you to the Jax State campus; part-time jobs are limited; and summers are hot and humid while the surrounding hills can bring sharp storms. If you want campus energy, you will find more of it in Jacksonville than in Gadsden.

A short checklist for the first weeks:

- Confirm which campus you actually attend most days, and base your room search there — Gadsden for Gadsden State, Jacksonville for Jax State.
- View any room in person before paying; a normal deposit is about one month's rent, paid only after a signed lease. Never wire money or send gift cards or crypto to hold a place.
- If you are an international student, read the Study in the States work rules and speak to your school's Designated School Official before taking any job.
- Get a library account — Houston Cole Library if you are at Jax State, the Gadsden Public Library on South College Street if you are in town.
- Plan transport honestly: price the $1.00 trolley for errands inside Gadsden, but arrange a car or lift share if you commute to Jacksonville.
- Furnish from the Sunday Mountain Top Flea Market and local thrift stores, and check EduFabTech's Gadsden listings for rooms, free furniture, jobs and events as term begins.

Gadsden rewards students who want a low cost of living and a quiet river town, and who are willing to organise their own transport and study routine. Go in knowing that, and the city is an affordable place to spend a degree.
