> What it is actually like to study in Macomb, Illinois: Western Illinois University, where students live, the fare-free bus, library hours, part-time work rules and a year's costs — each figure traced to its source.

## Western Illinois University and the town built around it

Macomb sits in west-central Illinois, in McDonough County, roughly 70 miles west of Peoria and surrounded by farmland on most sides. It is a small place: the U.S. Census Bureau's QuickFacts recorded a 2020 Census population of 15,051 for Macomb city and estimated 14,530 as of 1 July 2025 (census.gov). For a town that size, the university is not one feature among many — it is the reason much of the town looks the way it does, and the rhythm of the academic year shapes everything from bus timetables to how busy the Courthouse Square feels on a weekday.

Western Illinois University, according to its own history, traces its foundations to 1899 as the Western Illinois State Normal School and opened its Macomb campus in 1902 (wiu.edu/about). The main campus occupies a large residential site at 1 University Circle with around 60 buildings and seven residence halls, and the university lists a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio. Its best-known undergraduate programmes include Law Enforcement and Justice Administration, Elementary Education, Nursing and Psychology; the institution is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and its athletic teams compete in NCAA Division I as the Leathernecks.

The enrolment picture matters if you are deciding whether Macomb suits you. Western Illinois University reported total Fall 2026 enrolment of 4,447 (wiu.edu), down from recent years; in the same announcement the university pointed to improvements in retention, with first-time full-time freshman fall-to-fall retention at 62.2% for the Fall 2025 cohort and a 29.79% rise in incoming international students from Fall 2025. A shrinking headcount in a small town has two sides: quieter residence halls and easier access to staff, but also fewer of the amenities that a 30,000-student city campus takes for granted. WIU is the only degree-granting university inside Macomb, so this guide is about studying there specifically; you can browse local listings on EduFabTech at [/in/united-states/macomb](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macomb) and near campus at [/near/western-illinois-university](https://edufabtech.com/near/western-illinois-university).

## Where students live, and starting the search safely

Most first- and second-year students live on campus. Western Illinois University lists seven residence halls on the Macomb campus, and its housing requirement and rate schedule are published on the university's own site. Beyond the halls, students spread into the older neighbourhoods immediately west and north of campus — the grid of streets around West Adams, West Jackson and Charles Street — where much of the private rental stock is converted houses and small apartment buildings within walking or cycling distance of the quad. Because the town is compact, you can genuinely live without a car and reach class on foot or by bus.

The off-campus rental market here is small and seasonal, which changes how you search. Leases for the autumn tend to be signed months ahead, over the spring, because the pool of houses near campus is limited; if you arrive in August expecting to pick from dozens of vacancies, you will be disappointed. Start with the university's own off-campus housing resources and the student listings at [/in/united-states/macomb/rooms](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macomb/rooms), and treat anything advertised only through a social-media post with caution.

Rental scams in a university town like Macomb almost always follow the same shape: an attractive house near campus, a landlord who is conveniently "out of state" or "travelling", and a request to send a deposit to hold the room before you can see it. Do not. Macomb is small enough to view a place in person — walk or take the bus there, meet whoever has the keys, and confirm the address is a real rental and not a photo lifted from elsewhere. A deposit of roughly one month's rent is normal locally; no legitimate landlord in Macomb needs payment by bank wire, gift card or cryptocurrency, and any of those is a reliable sign of fraud. Get the lease and any deposit receipt in writing before money changes hands.

## Furnishing a room from the Square and the thrift shops

You do not need to buy new to set up a room here. Macomb's historic Courthouse Square is the town's shopping heart, and the Macomb Area Convention and Visitors Bureau lists a cluster of second-hand, antique and resale shops around it — among them The Crossing Thrift Store, plus antique and resale dealers such as East Main Treasures, Four Corners Antiques and Eras Vintage (visitforgottonia.com). These are where students reliably find desks, lamps, kitchenware and winter coats cheaply.

The end-of-semester move-out, especially in May, is the other great source: departing students give away or sell furniture that will not fit in a car. On EduFabTech you can look through second-hand goods at [/in/united-states/macomb/second-hand](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macomb/second-hand), larger items at [/in/united-states/macomb/furniture](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macomb/furniture), and things being given away at [/in/united-states/macomb/free-stuff](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macomb/free-stuff). For food and small comforts, the Macomb Farmers Market runs at Chandler Park every Thursday and Saturday from May through October, which the Visitors Bureau describes as Illinois' oldest continuous farmers market (visitforgottonia.com).

## Working while you study

The clearest route to a part-time job in Macomb is on campus — dining halls, the library, residence life and departmental roles — partly because the town's wider job market is small, and partly because on-campus work is the most straightforward option for international students. If you hold an F-1 visa, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Study in the States guidance states that you may apply for on-campus employment once your status is Active in SEVIS, as early as 30 days before classes begin, and that "if you participate in on-campus employment, you may not work more than 20 hours per week when school is in session" (studyinthestates.dhs.gov). Off-campus work and practical training (such as CPT and OPT) carry their own conditions and approvals.

This is a summary, not legal advice, and the rules change: confirm your own situation with WIU's international student office and your Designated School Official before you accept any job, and apply for a Social Security Number if you are authorised to work. Current openings aimed at students are collected on EduFabTech at [/in/united-states/macomb/jobs](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macomb/jobs).

## Where to study: the Malpass Library and quieter corners

The Leslie F. Malpass Library at 1 University Circle is the main study building, a six-level library with group study rooms, individual rooms and cubicles, computer labs and a Digital Commons. The university notes that the open study rooms "are not locked and may not be reserved" and work on a first-come, first-served basis (wiu.edu/libraries). For late sessions it keeps long hours in term: WIU's hours page lists Fall 2026 building hours of 8:00 a.m.–midnight Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Friday, 11:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m.–midnight Sunday, with doors locked ten minutes before closing (wiu.edu/libraries). Confirm these before relying on them, as hours shift between terms and over breaks.

Beyond the main library, WIU operates specialised branch collections, including a curriculum library for education students and a music library, which are useful quiet spaces in their own right. When the library is full around exams, the town itself offers few large alternatives, so it is worth scouting departmental lounges and study rooms early. EduFabTech keeps a running list of desks and study spaces at [/in/united-states/macomb/study-spaces](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macomb/study-spaces).

## Getting around on the fare-free Go West bus

Macomb's public transport is unusual and genuinely useful to students. The city operates Go West Transit, which WIU's own transportation page describes as "fare free public transportation around WIU and the City of Macomb", with pickup and drop-off service to Amtrak, classes, residence halls, shopping and dining (wiu.edu). There is no student fare card to buy and no ticket to tap, because the fixed routes carry everyone at no charge — which, in a town where many students have no car, effectively replaces the cost that a transit pass would be elsewhere.

For longer trips, Amtrak stops in Macomb with twice-daily round-trip service to Chicago's Union Station on the Carl Sandburg and Illinois Zephyr trains, according to the same WIU page. The nearest sizeable airport is Quad Cities International (MLI) at Moline, with Chicago's O'Hare and Midway reachable by the train. If you are coming from abroad, plan the final leg into Macomb around the Amtrak schedule rather than assuming a late-night connection exists.

## What a year costs

Two sourced anchors give you the rough shape of a budget. For living on campus, Western Illinois University's current rate schedule lists a standard double-occupancy room with a meal plan at $6,181.00 per semester, and a single with a meal plan at $7,869.00 per semester; the same schedule lists a $135.00 ResNet (high-speed internet) fee per semester (wiu.edu). The university's Board of Trustees approved the increase behind these figures on 12 March 2026, raising the double-occupancy room-and-dining rate by $474, a 3.99% rise for fiscal year 2027 (wiu.edu).

For living off campus, the U.S. Census Bureau's QuickFacts for Macomb city report a median gross rent of $765 for 2020–2024 (census.gov) — a figure for the whole town, so student rooms near campus can sit above or below it. The same source lists median household income at $44,411 for 2020–2024, a reminder that this is not a wealthy area and that local wages are modest. Tuition and fees are set separately by the university and vary by residency and programme; check WIU's billing office for the rate that applies to you rather than assuming a single number.

| Item | Figure | Source (year) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Double room + meal plan, on campus | $6,181.00 per semester | WIU rate schedule (2026–27) |
| Single room + meal plan, on campus | $7,869.00 per semester | WIU rate schedule (2026–27) |
| Median gross rent, town-wide | $765 | U.S. Census Bureau (2020–2024) |
| Median household income | $44,411 | U.S. Census Bureau (2020–2024) |

## The honest trade-offs

What Macomb does well for students is affordability and simplicity. Rents and living costs are low by national standards, the campus is walkable, and a fare-free bus removes a recurring expense that bites students in bigger cities. The small scale cuts both ways in your favour: staff are reachable, and you are unlikely to be anonymous. The thrift-and-reuse culture around the Square and the end-of-year move-out make it cheap to set up a room.

What is hard is also a function of scale and location. Macomb is rural and isolated — the nearest large airport and city-grade services are an Amtrak ride or a drive away, and winters in west-central Illinois are cold. The off-campus rental pool near campus is small, so timing your search matters more than it would in a city. Nightlife, shopping and the wider job market are limited, and the university's falling enrolment is a real backdrop: it can mean fewer events, consolidated services and uncertainty about some programmes. If you want a quiet, low-cost base to study and do not need a big-city menu of distractions, that trade can work well; if you draw energy from a crowd, weigh it carefully before committing.

## A checklist for your first weeks

1. Confirm your housing in writing — a dated lease or the WIU housing agreement — and never send a deposit by wire, gift card or crypto to hold a room you have not seen.
2. If you are on an F-1 visa, meet your Designated School Official at the international office before accepting any job, and apply for a Social Security Number if you are authorised to work.
3. Learn the Go West Transit routes between your room, campus and the grocery stores in your first week; the service is free, so use it from day one.
4. Walk the Courthouse Square and the thrift shops early in the term, before the best second-hand furniture is gone.
5. Check current Malpass Library hours for the term and find a backup study spot for exam weeks, when the library fills.
6. Note the Amtrak timetable to Chicago before booking any trip home, and plan your arrival into Macomb around it.
7. Browse local listings — rooms, jobs, second-hand goods and events — at [/in/united-states/macomb/events](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macomb/events) and across the Macomb pages on EduFabTech.
