> What it is actually like to study in Macon, Georgia: the universities, the College Hill Corridor, renting without being scammed, second-hand shopping, transit fares and sourced costs.

Macon sits almost exactly in the middle of Georgia, on a bend of the Ocmulgee River about 85 miles south of Atlanta. It is a mid-sized Southern city — the U.S. Census Bureau's QuickFacts for Macon-Bibb County gives a population of 157,556 as of 1 July 2025 — with a consolidated city-county government, a walkable historic downtown, and a student population concentrated in a handful of institutions rather than spread across a dozen. If you come here to study, Mercer University is almost certainly the reason, and the rhythm of the city during term is shaped by it.

The character of Macon is worth knowing before you arrive. Summers are long, hot and humid; spring is the city's showpiece, when the International Cherry Blossom Festival fills the streets. The music heritage is real and not decorative — this is where the Allman Brothers Band and Otis Redding worked — and it feeds into Mercer's Townsend School of Music and the downtown venues. Compared with Atlanta, Macon is cheaper, slower and far smaller, which is both its appeal and its limitation for students.

This guide covers the universities, where students live, how to rent without being cheated, furnishing a room cheaply, work rules, study spaces, transport and costs — with the numbers tied to the pages that publish them. You can also browse current student listings for the city on EduFabTech's [Macon page](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macon).

## Mercer, a technical college, and a state university with aviation in its DNA

**Mercer University** is the anchor. Its main campus is in Macon, and according to Mercer's own Facts and Figures the university enrolled 8,945 students in Fall 2025 — 4,727 undergraduate and 4,218 graduate — across 12 schools and colleges, with students drawn from 48 states and 41 countries. The same page notes that 89% of students are Georgia residents, so an international or out-of-state student is joining a campus that is largely in-state but not exclusively so. The Macon campus is home to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering, the School of Business, the College of Education, the Townsend School of Music, and the School of Law, which Mercer's facts page describes as founded in 1873 and one of the oldest in the United States.

The **Mercer University Health Sciences Center (Macon)** groups the university's medical and health programmes. The School of Medicine's Macon campus page lists its address at 1550 College Street and describes degree programmes including the Doctor of Medicine, PhDs in Biomedical Sciences and Rural Health Science, a Master of Science in Preclinical Sciences and a Master of Family Therapy, alongside research centres focused on rural health. For anyone aiming at medicine, nursing, pharmacy or the health professions, this is the part of Mercer to look at closely.

Macon is not a one-university town, though. **Central Georgia Technical College (Warner Robins)**, a unit of the Technical College System of Georgia, runs its main campus a short drive south; the college's Warner Robins campus page places it at 80 Cohen Walker Drive, with programmes spanning aerospace trades, dental hygiene, cosmetology, criminal justice and business technologies. It is where many local students take associate degrees, diplomas and certificates at a fraction of private-university tuition. Middle Georgia State University, which absorbed the former Macon State College in a 2013 consolidation, also operates a Macon campus and is known regionally for its School of Aviation. Between these institutions, a student in Macon can study anything from aircraft maintenance to medicine without leaving Bibb or Houston county.

## On campus first, then the College Hill Corridor

Where you live depends heavily on your year, because Mercer has a residency requirement. Its Macon Housing and Residence Life pages state that all freshmen, sophomores and juniors under the age of 22 are required to live on campus and buy a meal plan, with exceptions for students who turn 22 before fall classes, those living with family within 40 miles or in named nearby counties, and married students or single parents. In practice this means most undergraduates spend their first three years in university housing, and only seniors or older students move freely into the private market.

Mercer's halls fall into recognisable types. Traditional double rooms with shared community bathrooms are in Boone, Dowell, Legacy and Roberts halls; suite-style buildings where a cluster of rooms shares a bathroom include Mercer, Plunkett, Porter, Shorter and Sherwood halls; and apartment-style options — Adams/Winship, the Garden Apartments, Orange Street Apartments and the Greek Village houses — suit older students who want a kitchen. The university also recognises the privately owned Lofts at Mercer as satisfying the residency requirement for sophomores and juniors, but those leases are paid directly to the property, not to Mercer.

Off campus, the neighbourhood to understand is the **College Hill Corridor**, which the College Hill Alliance describes as a two-square-mile area of historic neighbourhoods between Mercer University and downtown Macon. A decade and more of investment there has turned once-empty blocks into walkable streets with apartments above shops, which is where many graduate students and seniors end up. Beyond it, Ingleside and Vineville to the north-west are leafy, established residential areas, while downtown proper offers loft conversions. ## Signing a lease in Macon without losing a deposit

Because so many Macon undergraduates live on campus by rule, the off-campus market skews toward graduate students, seniors and people new to the city — exactly the people most likely to rent sight-unseen, which is where scams appear. The pattern in Macon is the familiar one: an advertised house in the College Hill Corridor, Ingleside or downtown at a price noticeably below the local norm, a "landlord" who is conveniently out of town, and a request to wire a deposit to hold it. The U.S. Census Bureau's QuickFacts put the median gross rent in Macon-Bibb County at $1,066 a month for 2020-2024, so an unusually cheap listing for a whole house should prompt caution rather than excitement.

A few habits keep you safe. See the actual unit in person, or send someone you trust, before paying anything — Macon is compact enough that this is realistic even if you are arranging things from the Mercer campus. Confirm the person collecting money controls the property. Expect to pay a deposit and perhaps first month's rent by a method that leaves a record, and treat any demand to pay by bank wire, gift card or cryptocurrency to "reserve" a room as a reason to walk away; legitimate Macon landlords do not need funds moved in ways that cannot be reversed. Get the lease, the deposit terms and any move-in condition notes in writing. If you are an international student, the university's International Student and Scholar Services office can help you read a lease before you sign.

## Furnishing a room: Antique Alley, flea markets and giveaways

Macon rewards patient second-hand shoppers. Mulberry Street downtown is lined with the antique and vintage dealers locals call Antique Alley, good for furniture and odds and ends if you have time to browse. The Historic Macon Foundation runs a large flea market twice a year at 357 Oglethorpe Street, a practical place to pick up household goods cheaply; market and pop-up schedules change, so confirm dates before you make a trip. For produce and small goods there is a long tradition of farmers' markets around Tattnall Square Park, near Mercer, though the exact days shift season to season.

For the fastest results, start online before you arrive. EduFabTech lists [second-hand things](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macon/second-hand), [used furniture](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macon/furniture) and [items given away free](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macon/free-stuff) in Macon — the free-stuff listings are worth watching at the end of each semester, when departing students clear out desks, lamps and mini-fridges. A desk, a chair and a lamp bought second-hand will cost a fraction of new, and in a city this size the seller is usually a short drive away.

## Work rules for students, and where to check them

If you are an international student on an F-1 visa, your right to work is limited and defined by federal rules, not by the employer or the university. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services states on its Students and Employment page that F-1 students "may not work off-campus during the first academic year, but may accept on-campus employment subject to certain conditions and restrictions," and that off-campus options such as Curricular Practical Training and Optional Practical Training become available later and must be authorised. This is general information, not legal advice: confirm your own situation with Mercer's designated school official before you accept any job, because working outside your authorisation can jeopardise your status.

For domestic students, on-campus jobs, work-study and part-time roles across Macon's restaurants, shops and the two big hospital systems are the usual options. Current postings for the city are collected on EduFabTech's [Macon jobs page](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macon/jobs).

## Libraries and desks: Tarver, Skelton and Washington Memorial

Mercer's main academic library is the Jack Tarver Library. Its Fall 2025 hours run Tuesday to Thursday 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Saturday 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and the library notes that 24/7 study spaces stay open and accessible with a Bear Card — useful during exam weeks when you need a desk at 2 a.m. Health-sciences students have the separate Skelton Medical Libraries at the Health Sciences Center.

Off campus, the Middle Georgia Regional Library System's Washington Memorial Library at 1180 Washington Avenue is open to the public and is a quiet alternative with free wi-fi and study tables; as with any public library, confirm current opening hours before you rely on them, as they change seasonally. For a change of scene, the College Hill Corridor's cafés double as informal study spots. EduFabTech also keeps a list of [study spaces and desks](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/macon/study-spaces) in the city.

## Buses, cars and the walk downtown

Public transport in Macon is run by the Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority (MTA). Its fares page lists a regular one-way fixed-route fare of $1.25, a 31-day unlimited pass at $50.00, and multi-ride tickets (10 rides for $12.00, 20 for $20.00). Fares can be paid with a Smart Card, available at the downtown transfer station, or through a smartphone app. The fares page does not list a specific university-student discount, so budget for the standard fare unless Mercer or the MTA announces a programme.

Be realistic about the buses: Macon's fixed-route network is designed around the transfer station downtown and runs limited hours compared with a big-city system, so many students find a car or a bike more practical day to day, especially for reaching Central Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins. Within the College Hill Corridor and around the Mercer campus, though, walking and cycling are genuinely viable, which is part of why that area is popular.

## What it costs, and what is hard

The clearest sourced figures come from Mercer itself. For the 2026-2027 academic year, the university's Office of Student Financial Planning lists the residential undergraduate cost of attendance as $44,784 tuition, a $500 facility and technology fee, $8,046 for housing and $7,866 for food — a total of $61,196 in direct costs, with estimated indirect costs of $4,184 bringing the full estimate to $65,380 for the year. That housing figure is the one to anchor on if you are comparing a dorm against a private room. In the wider rental market, the Census Bureau's median gross rent of $1,066 a month (2020-2024) is the best published benchmark, and splitting a house in the College Hill Corridor or Ingleside can bring the per-person figure well below that.

| Item | Figure | Source (year) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mercer housing (2026-27) | $8,046 / year | Mercer Financial Planning (2026) |
| Mercer food (2026-27) | $7,866 / year | Mercer Financial Planning (2026) |
| Median gross rent | $1,066 / month | U.S. Census Bureau (2020-2024) |
| MTA one-way fare | $1.25 | Macon-Bibb Transit Authority (2026) |
| MTA 31-day pass | $50.00 | Macon-Bibb Transit Authority (2026) |

The honest trade-offs: Macon is affordable by U.S. standards, compact and warm, with a real downtown revival and a close-knit Mercer community that is easy to plug into. Against that, the city is small — nightlife, international food and big-city amenities are thinner than in Atlanta, and some students feel the pull north at weekends. Summers are genuinely hot and humid. Public transport is limited, so life without a car takes planning. And because Mercer's residency rules keep most undergraduates on campus, the off-campus student-rental market is modest, which makes the few good houses competitive and the scam listings more tempting. None of these is a reason to stay away; they are things to plan around.

## A checklist for your first weeks in Macon

- Sort housing status first: if you are a first-, second- or third-year Mercer undergraduate under 22, confirm whether the residency requirement applies to you before signing anything off campus.
- Never wire a deposit for a room you have not seen; pay by a method that leaves a record, and see the unit or send someone you trust.
- Get a Bear Card and learn Tarver Library's 24/7 spaces; find the Washington Memorial Library downtown as a backup.
- If you are on an F-1 visa, meet Mercer's international office and confirm work rules with your designated school official before taking any job.
- Decide early about a car: price out an MTA 31-day pass against the cost of running a vehicle, especially if you will commute to Warner Robins.
- Furnish second-hand — check EduFabTech's free-stuff and furniture listings and the twice-yearly Historic Macon Foundation flea market before buying anything new.
- Walk the College Hill Corridor between campus and downtown; it is the part of Macon where student life actually happens, and seeing it on foot tells you more than any listing.
