> What it is like to study in Youngstown, Ohio: Youngstown State and Kent State at Salem, sourced housing costs, the free WRTA buses and YSU shuttle, thrift shops for furnishing a room, and the honest trade-offs.

Youngstown sits in the Mahoning Valley of north-eastern Ohio, roughly between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, in a part of the United States that people still call the Steel Valley. The mills that gave the city its name and its population are mostly gone, and the place that remains is smaller and cheaper than its old street grid was built for. For a student that combination is the whole story: inexpensive rooms, short distances, and a university that has become the single largest reason downtown is still busy on a weekday morning.

Most of that student life orbits one institution in the city itself, with a second Kent State campus a short drive south. This guide names the universities, explains where students actually sleep and how to rent without being cheated, and puts real, dated numbers on what a year costs — the kind you can check yourself before you sign anything.

It is written for anyone weighing Youngstown, whether you grew up in Boardman or are flying in from another country and have never seen snow come off a lake. Where a figure matters, the institution and the year are in the sentence, and the exact page is linked.

## The universities: Youngstown State and Kent State at Salem

**Youngstown State University** is the anchor. According to the university's own About YSU page, it was founded in 1908 as part of the local YMCA and became part of the Ohio state system in 1967; its campus covers 140 acres with a park-like central core, it enrols more than 12,000 students, and it runs over 100 undergraduate majors across five colleges — including the Williamson College of Business Administration, the Bitonte College of Health & Human Services, and a College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics whose Excellence Training Center the page says holds over $10 million of advanced manufacturing equipment. The campus is not tucked away behind a ring road; it runs straight into downtown along Wick Avenue and Fifth Avenue, which is why the city centre and the university feel like one place.

**Kent State University at Salem** is the regional option. It is a campus of Kent State in Salem — Kent State's own Salem campus page gives its address as 2491 State Route 45, Salem, OH 44460 — and it grants associate and bachelor's degrees rather than being a research campus. It is best known locally for nursing and radiologic technology. Salem is about 30 minutes by car from Youngstown, so it is a realistic choice if you want a quieter, rural setting and already have transport; it is not somewhere you commute to on a city bus.

If you are comparing the two, treat them as different animals: YSU is a full urban university with residence halls, athletics and graduate programmes, while Kent State at Salem is a smaller commuter campus feeding into Kent State's wider system. You can browse what is listed around each on EduFabTech at [/near/youngstown-state-university](https://edufabtech.com/near/youngstown-state-university) and [/near/kent-state-university-at-salem](https://edufabtech.com/near/kent-state-university-at-salem).

## Where students live

Youngstown gives you three broad choices. The first is a YSU residence hall, which keeps you inside the campus core and within walking distance of the library and the WATTS athletic building. The second is the streets immediately around campus — Wick Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Lincoln Avenue and the redeveloped Smoky Hollow pocket just east of the core — where older houses and small apartment buildings have long been rented to students. The third, popular with people who own a car, is the suburbs south of the city: Boardman and Austintown, where much of the Valley's newer shopping and housing sits.

Because Youngstown's housing stock is old and the city has lost population, rents here are low by national standards. The U.S. Census Bureau's QuickFacts for Youngstown city put the median gross rent at $728 for 2020-2024 and median household income at $34,408 over the same period, against a 2020 census population of 60,068. A low median rent is genuinely useful to a student, but it travels with the city's other numbers — this is not a wealthy town, and a cheap street and a rough street can be one block apart.

Start looking early. For a hall place, YSU's housing process runs months ahead of the August move-in; the 2026-2027 contract lists new-student move-in as 19 August 2026. For a private room near campus, the useful window is late spring through July, before returning students have taken the better houses. You can see what is currently going in the city on EduFabTech at [/in/united-states/youngstown/rooms](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/youngstown/rooms).

## Renting without losing a deposit

The scams you need to watch for in Youngstown follow the city's own geography. Because there are many empty and low-priced houses, a listing that looks like a whole house for the price of a room is not necessarily a bargain — it is the classic bait for a fake landlord who has copied photos of a real property. The warning signs are the same everywhere but worth stating plainly: a "landlord" who is conveniently out of town, who will not let you walk through the actual unit, and who wants money before you have a signed lease.

The single rule that protects you: see the inside of the specific unit — in person, or on a live video call where the person walks through it for you — before you pay anything, and never send a deposit by bank wire, gift card or cryptocurrency to "hold" a place. Those payment methods cannot be reversed, and no legitimate Youngstown landlord needs them. A normal arrangement here is a signed lease plus a security deposit of about one month's rent, paid when you get keys, by a traceable method. If you are abroad and cannot visit, lean on YSU's housing office or an established hall for your first term and find a private room once you are on the ground and can view it yourself.

## Furnishing a room: the Thrift Trail and the Valley's second-hand shops

The Mahoning Valley is unusually good for cheap second-hand furniture, partly because so many households have cleared out over the years. Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries runs an annual Thrift Trail, a seasonal map of mission-based resale stores across the Valley; its 2026 edition ran 12 January to 31 March 2026 and listed shops including St. Vincent de Paul, Penny Pinchers Consignment, Veterans Outreach (VO Depot), a Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Struthers and The Salvation Army. The ReStore in particular is where to look for desks, chairs and lamps rather than clothes.

For the everyday run — a kettle, a reading lamp, a second set of plates — the standard Goodwill and St. Vincent de Paul stores around the city and in Boardman are the dependable stops, and Habitat ReStore handles the bulkier furniture. On EduFabTech you can also check what other students in the city are selling or giving away before you buy anything new, at [/in/united-states/youngstown/second-hand](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/youngstown/second-hand). Buy the mattress new if you can; everything else is fair game second-hand.

## Working while you study

If you are a domestic student, part-time work in Youngstown looks like it does anywhere in Ohio — campus jobs, shops and food service, much of it clustered in the suburban retail of Boardman and Austintown where a car helps. International students face federal limits, and the rules are not something to take from a forum. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's own Study in the States page states that an F-1 student "may not work more than 20 hours per week when school is in session" and describes on-campus employment as the most straightforward category. It also stresses speaking to your Designated School Official before taking any job, because the practical training categories (such as CPT and OPT) have their own conditions. Treat the DHS page and your international-student office as the authorities here; this guide is not legal advice, and the penalties for getting work rules wrong fall on your visa, not your employer. Current openings students are sharing locally are at [/in/united-states/youngstown/jobs](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/youngstown/jobs).

## Libraries and places to study

On campus, the William F. Maag Jr. Library is the main workspace, and it is built for the way students actually study. Its study-spaces guide describes silent-study floors (5, 5A, 6 and 6A, marked for no groups), group-study floors with whiteboards, enclosed individual study rooms, two podcast rooms with microphones and computers, a family study room for student parents, and exam rooms with webcams for online testing. There is a Maag Café on the third floor.

Off campus, the Main library of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County sits downtown at 305 Wick Avenue, a short walk from YSU. The library's Main location page lists hours of 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, closed Sunday, with study rooms, meeting rooms and a DIY space. For a quiet desk on a Saturday, or somewhere to work that is not the hall common room, it is the obvious second home. More study spots that students post are at [/in/united-states/youngstown/study-spaces](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/youngstown/study-spaces).

## Getting around

Public transport in Youngstown is run by the Western Reserve Transit Authority (WRTA). The unusual and genuinely useful fact for students is that, as of 2026, WRTA's own Fares & Passes page states that rides on all WRTA buses are free, and that sales of day passes, multi-ride tickets and 31-day passes have been suspended — so there is no fare card to buy and no student discount to apply for, because there is no fare. (The page gives no end date for this, so confirm it is still current when you arrive.)

On top of the regular network, WRTA and YSU run a free campus shuttle, the Red & White Campus Loop. According to WRTA's announcement, it runs Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters, on two continuous 16-minute loops through campus and the near-downtown streets, open to all students, staff and visitors with no ID or fare required, and trackable on the myStop app. Between the free buses and a walkable campus, you can study at YSU without a car — but the suburban jobs and the bigger supermarkets are easier to reach with one, and WRTA's evening and weekend coverage is limited, so weigh that before deciding you need no wheels at all.

## Costs, and the honest trade-offs

For the on-campus figure, YSU's 2026-2027 housing contract lists the standard residence-hall rate at $6,000 per semester, i.e. $12,000 for the academic year, with a single-room surcharge of $1,750 per semester where available and a $250 charge for winter-break housing (no meals). The same page lists apartment-style Weller House at $6,885 per academic year for a one-bedroom or studio, rising to $8,685 for a three-bedroom. For a private room off campus, the city's low median gross rent of $728 for 2020-2024, from the Census QuickFacts cited above, is your anchor — many student rentals near campus sit around or below that, which is cheap for the United States.

What is good about Youngstown for a student is mostly the money and the scale: rents and second-hand goods are inexpensive, the campus runs into downtown so you can live without a car, and the buses are free. What is hard is the flip side of a shrunken industrial city. Winters are cold and grey with real snow; some streets near campus are run-down and you should choose a block, not just a house; the nightlife and the big shopping are dispersed into the suburbs rather than concentrated downtown; and job options are thinner than in a bigger metro. None of that is hidden — it is visible on the drive in, and it is why the city is as affordable as it is.

## First weeks: a checklist

- If you are living in a hall, confirm your move-in date against the YSU 2026-2027 housing contract (new-student move-in was 19 August 2026) and your meal arrangement before you arrive.
- Download the myStop app and learn the Red & White Campus Loop and the nearest WRTA route — both free — before you plan around a car.
- For a private room, view the actual unit (in person or by live video) and sign a lease before paying; a deposit of about one month's rent, paid by a traceable method on key handover, is normal — never wire, gift-card or crypto a "holding" fee.
- Get a library card at the Main library on Wick Avenue, and scout your study spots: a silent floor in Maag for exam weeks, a group room for projects.
- Furnish from the Thrift Trail stores and the Habitat ReStore, and check EduFabTech's [Youngstown second-hand](https://edufabtech.com/in/united-states/youngstown/second-hand) listings before buying anything new but a mattress.
- International students: meet your Designated School Official in week one and read the DHS Study in the States work rules before taking any job.

Youngstown will not dazzle anyone on arrival. But for a student who wants a real university, a cheap room, free buses and a short walk to class, the Mahoning Valley delivers an honest version of all four — and leaves you money for everything else.
