Osmanlı İmparatorluğu fotoğraf sanatıyla, keşfinden kısa süre sonra tanıştı. Doğu’ya ulaşan gezgin fotoğrafçıların 1840’larda çektiği ilk görüntülerden sonra, 1850’lerden itibaren Grande Rue de Pera’da yerli stüdyolar açılmaya başladı.
