Apple Intelligence in China Will Route Some Siri Requests to Alibaba's Qwen
Apple and Alibaba said on 31 October 2026 that Qwen will power parts of Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence in China's Apple Intelligence, with developer testing from 4 November and a public rollout in iOS 27.3 in December.
Apple and Alibaba Group said on 31 October 2026 that Alibaba's Qwen model will power parts of Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence in the China edition of Apple Intelligence. Developer testing starts with an iOS 27.3 beta on 4 November 2026, and Apple says the features reach the public with the full iOS 27.3 release in December 2026, according to Apple's own announcement on its China newsroom page.
The move answers a question that had hung over Apple Intelligence since it was first shown at WWDC in 2024: which large language model would sit behind it in a market where Apple's existing ChatGPT extension cannot operate, since Apple's own support documentation notes the ChatGPT integration is limited to regions where the ChatGPT app and service are available, and OpenAI's service is not approved in mainland China. Apple's China newsroom notice lists the supported devices as iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo, and specifies that both Siri and the device language must be set to English and Simplified Chinese for the features to appear.
Apple's announcement does not name a specific Qwen model version, so there is no published benchmark score to compare against other assistants' underlying models yet. Independent reporting on the integration, including coverage by CNBC, has not identified one either.

What changes inside Apple's assistant
According to Apple's China newsroom page, the broader update brings real-time translation across Messages, FaceTime and the Phone app, rewriting and proofreading tools, Visual Intelligence camera recognition, a photo clean-up tool, Genmoji, natural-language photo and video search, memory movies, Mail summaries, priority notifications, smart replies and a Type to Siri feature with contextual awareness. Qwen is woven into a subset of these: Siri can hand off certain requests to it for broader general knowledge, Visual Intelligence can use it to answer questions about photos and documents such as PDFs and presentations, and Writing Tools can call on it to draft original text from a prompt.
Access to the Qwen-powered features requires signing in with a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple, and Apple's announcement states that users can choose whether to turn the integration on and what information they share with it. The same announcement specifies that this release does not include the next-generation Apple Intelligence capabilities Apple previewed at WWDC 2026 — those are being held back for a later update.
The regulatory path behind the announcement runs back to mid-2026. On 15 July 2026, CNBC reported that China's Cyberspace Administration had added Apple's AI service to a list of approved generative AI offerings for smartphones, alongside domestic providers such as Huawei, clearing the regulatory obstacle that had kept Apple Intelligence out of China since 2024.
Qwen is Alibaba's family of large language models, developed by the company's Qwen team, with several smaller variants released under open-weight licences. Alibaba said it will not use the requests users send to Qwen through Apple Intelligence, or the responses it generates, to train its models, according to Alibaba's statement reported by CGTN.

What it means for developers and researchers
For developers building for iOS in China, the integration sets a concrete date: anyone shipping Siri App Intents, Writing Tools extensions or Visual Intelligence integrations now has a public beta, from 4 November 2026, against which to test how requests route between Apple's on-device models and Qwen. For researchers studying multi-model assistant architectures, the deployment is a public example of a consumer platform routing some requests to a third-party foundation model by jurisdiction rather than by task difficulty alone — the same assistant behaves differently depending on whether the device location and Apple Account region are set to China.
No independent evaluation of the Qwen-powered Siri, Writing Tools or Visual Intelligence features has been published yet, since the beta had not opened as of this announcement. Apple's notice gives no model name or version number, so any claim about the integration's accuracy, context window or multilingual performance relative to Qwen's published open-weight models should be treated as unverified until the beta can be tested directly.
The primary records
Apple's own notice, published on its China newsroom site, is the primary record of the feature list, device requirements and dates. Alibaba's data-training commitment was reported by CGTN, and the July 2026 regulatory clearance that preceded the partnership was reported by CNBC.
