OpenAI Rolls Out GPT-6 With an Interactive "Intelligent UI" to All ChatGPT Tiers
Starting October 7, 2026, OpenAI began letting ChatGPT answer with generated buttons, charts and mini-tools instead of only text, while leaving the models behind its Codex coding tool unchanged.
OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 to ChatGPT on October 7, 2026, paired with a new feature called Intelligent UI that lets the chatbot answer with interactive graphics, buttons, forms and small embedded tools instead of only text. The paid-tier rollout, running on a variant called GPT-6 Sol, reached ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users first; a second variant, GPT-6 Luna, extended Intelligent UI to the Free and Go tiers starting October 8, 2026, according to OpenAI's announcement.
What Intelligent UI actually changes
Instead of returning a block of prose, GPT-6 can now assemble a response out of a library of interface components as it generates the answer: side-by-side comparison tables, interactive diagrams, maps, calculators, bill-splitters and small embedded games, chosen according to what the question calls for. OpenAI demonstrated the feature with a bicycle-repair walkthrough and a Sunday roast planner that combined images, an adjustable shopping calculator and a cooking timeline, as described in OpenAI's release post.

The mechanism behind this, per OpenAI and corroborated by TestingCatalog's review of the rollout, is a "library of native, streamable components together with a compiler" that renders interface elements progressively on web and mobile as the model keeps generating, rather than waiting for a complete response before displaying anything. OpenAI frames this as an extension of GPT-6's "interleaved thinking," in which the model begins composing an answer from partial findings while it is still reasoning.
Speed and capability claims
OpenAI reports that GPT-6 Instant answers web-search queries 44% faster on average than GPT-5.6 Instant, and that GPT-6 Extra High matches GPT-5.6 Medium's response latency while scoring higher overall than GPT-5.6 Extra High, according to OpenAI's own announcement. These are OpenAI's internal figures; no independent benchmark of the Intelligent UI rollout has been published yet, and the comparison is against OpenAI's own prior model generation rather than against competing chatbots.
OpenAI also says GPT-6 carries "stronger resistance to attempts to bypass its safety training, particularly attacks that adapt over multiple turns," along with updated safeguards around cyberattack, biological-threat and violent content, and says the model more often acknowledges the limits of what it knows, per the same release post.
What stayed the same
Not every ChatGPT product moved with this release. OpenAI's announcement states that the models powering Work and Codex are not changing, a point TestingCatalog also confirms. That leaves Codex, the coding-focused agent many developers use, with the model it already had — Intelligent UI is, for now, a feature of ChatGPT's general chat interface rather than a change to OpenAI's software-engineering tooling.

Why it matters beyond the chat window
Generating a user interface on the fly, rather than retrieving a pre-built one, is a pattern researchers in human-computer interaction and software engineering have studied under names like "generative UI" and "UI synthesis," and OpenAI's rollout is now one of the largest live deployments of the idea, reaching, in the company's words, "more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week," per OpenAI's release post. For students and engineers studying interface generation, it offers a large, observable case of a streaming component compiler operating at consumer scale — though OpenAI has not published the compiler's design, its component library, or its evaluation methodology for outside review.
OpenAI itself flags that the feature is unfinished, stating that the model's "design judgment and the range of experiences it can create still need work," as Unite.AI's coverage of the launch also records. For now, the claims about speed, safety and interface quality rest on OpenAI's own description of its own product; independent testing of Intelligent UI's reliability, accessibility and failure modes has not yet appeared.
