Flatmates in Amsterdam

A room in a shared flat in Amsterdam typically costs around 650 euros a month for a room with shared facilities, according to the national student housing monitor reported by Hogeschool Utrecht's Trajectum news service (2026). If you plan to stay more than a few months, you must register your address with the municipality within five days of moving in, according to the official I amsterdam registration page (2025) — ask the person offering the room, in writing, whether you can register there before you agree to anything. Start with your university's housing office and official student housing providers: the University of Amsterdam's own housing office can only offer a room to 50–60% of eligible applicants (2026), so apply early and keep looking elsewhere too. As a tenant, your rent for a room can be capped under a national points system, and you can challenge it at the Rent Tribunal (Huurcommissie) for 25 euros as an individual, according to the Dutch government's official housing information (2026).

Watch for these common warning signs of a rental scam:

• You're asked to pay a deposit or reservation fee before seeing the room, by bank transfer, gift card or crypto
• The "landlord" is abroad, refuses video calls, or only uses chat apps
• They say you cannot register with the municipality at that address

See the room in person or on a live video call, and never pay anything to hold it before then. EduFabTech never takes payments.
